The Amusement Fantasie

For clarinet, violin, cello and piano. The Amusement Fantasie is an instrumental version of three arias from my opera "The Amusement." I arranged it for the Northwest Piano Trio with a clarinet part.

The first movement- "Host of Blows"- is from the aria for the muse Erato. She is calling her sisters together to relieve the suffering of Arthur, the protagonist, who is grieving the loss of his wife and son in childbirth. A Native American gathering song inspired the music.

The second movement- "Two Muses"- is a lively song and dance where the muses introduce their sisters to Arthur.

"Arthur's Motto" is the final movement, radiating hope for Arthur's new life that moves beyond despair. In the opera Arthur sings:
All that matters
in extinction events
is what survives them.
This must become my motto.
