Terra Nova

for flute/piccolo and Native American flute with loop pedal

Our planet is changing due to the behavior of human beings. The burning of fossil fuels and clearing of forests has resulted in many natural disasters. This piece documents these changes and challenges us to pay attention to the damage our civilization is causing to planet Earth. I wrote this piece for Amelia Lucas who bravely mastered the loop pedal and the Native American flute to premiere this piece.

  1. Bristlecone Pine Forest- 10,000 feet above the earth 4,000-year-old trees stand as sentinels, witnessing the changing landscape.

  2. Atmospheric River- From 2022-2023, 12 atmospheric rivers on the West Coast eased California's drought with torrential rains and floods

  3. Lake Mead- More than 1,000 years ago Native Americans began migrating to Lake Mead. During the drought of 2022 human remains, sunken boats, and baby strollers were found at the bottom of the lake.

  4. Kò- To the Native Americans, fire -Kò -was like a messenger and a gift from the great spirit. Their traditions of controlled burns can reduce out of control wildfires.
